DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Under the overall guidance of the Director, NRC, and the technical supervision of the Leader, Climate Impact, Adaptation and Environment Team (NRC), in close collaboration with the staff in the Climate Impact, Adaptation and Environment Team (NRC), Agricultural Development Economics Division (ESA) and with other technical units involved in the FAO/EC Food Security Thematic Programme (FSTP), the incumbent will contribute to the Climate Change Component of the EC/FAO Programme on Improved Global Governance for Hunger Reduction (GCP/INT/130/EU). In particular, the incumbent will :
  • contribute to the development of the tools and methods for climate change impact assessment, crop yield forecasting toolbox (AgroMetShell);
  • organize training modules to support capacity building of different users involved in the national food security information systems in selected countries;
  • provide support to the development of specific outputs at global, regional and national level for the FAO Global Information and Early Warning System on Food and Agriculture (GIEWS);
  • analyse historical, current and expected climate variability and trends, and components of food security (e.g., production) and assist in the identification of adaptation options;
  • perform other related duties as required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Candidates should meet the following:
  • University degree in geography, agriculture, climatology, environmental sciences or closely related field
  • Three years of relevant experience in agro-meteorological/climate variability and climate change impact modelling, assessment and adaptation
  • Working knowledge of English and limited knowledge of French
SELECTION CRITERIA Candidates will be assessed against the following:
  • Extent of experience with development and use of deterministic and stochastic models (climate, crop, hydrology, economics), GIS software, remote sensing and geo-spatial datasets and analysis
  • Extent of experience in developing effective capacity building tools and methods
  • Ability to organize trainings related to climate change impact assessment and adaptation
  • Experience in dealing with national governments, regional bodies and international organizations on climate impact assessment and adaptation issues
  • Quality of oral and written communication skills
