Victory Garden Initiative is a non-profit organization that builds communities who grow their own food as a way of life; creating a community based, ecologically sustainable, socially just and nutritious food system.                                                 

It is a small, dynamic and rapidly growing organization seeking the right team member to join it in changing the landscape of Milwaukee into a lush food producing city. This is an exciting time to get involved with a leading Milwaukee food organization.

Job description

 The Youth Educator works with groups of children at the after/summer school programs to develop the skills needed to grow food in an urban environment, and developing and growing the initiative’s programs to full capacity.  This position is for an ambitious, dynamic educator who wants to grow the position into a full-time benefitted position and create a city-wide school garden program.  The capacity to grow professionally and simultaneously positively impact the Milwaukee community is enormous.

Primary Duties:

  • Develops and teaches youth curriculum and farmstand programs at various Milwaukee Public School sites
  • Inspire urban youth to grow fruits and veggies and sell them at their youth-led farm stand
  • Creates partnerships with community organizations
  • Considers strategic opportunities for advancement and expansion of youth programs
  • Sets ambitions goals,  and evaluates and reports on program success and advancement
  • Stays aware of the cutting edge of education in the food and environmental movement
  • Understands budget and works within budget to meet program goals
  • Represents Victory Garden Initiative in the community
  • Mentors young people towards the advancement of VGI’s mission
  • Lives a lifestyle that is representative of VGI’s mission during and after work hours

Skills, abilities, talents, experiences

  • Knowledge of gardening, permaculture and VGI’s mission
  • Strong team player that brings diversity and richness to the team
  • 2 years experience working with youth, especially urban youth
  • Desire to grow programs to several sites, expanding the position and responsibilities
  • Spanish Speaking is preferred
  • Ability to write and teach youth gardening curriculum
  • Excellent classroom management skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with people of all ages and from diverse backgrounds
  • Tolerates an irreverent sense of humor
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs, work outdoors, and meet physical demands of gardening

Salary Details:

 Part Time Exempt $13000-$18000 Plus PTO, with opportunity for growth
